Direct referrals is people that you invite to join sites. You usually will get comission (it can be money credits or everything depending on the site) from your referrals. Now how to get them? There are several ways i know :
1.You can invite your friends or your family straightly, tell them about the site, give them your referral links and they become your referrals.
2.invite people from forums or social media like Facebook Twitter etc. it's hard to do and hard to see progress in short time.
3.Use Traffic Exchanges, Traffic Exchange system is you click ads, and you get credits, you assign your credits to your ads, people see your ads. If you using Traffic Exchange, you have to make a Simple and Eye-catching ads because people will only see your ad about 15-30 seconds if they see it's not interesting... they will go on and you lose them. Try not to make ad of the registration form, people won't do the register and continue, maybe you can place your Blog for the ads. Here's some good traffic Exchange sites:
